…and what to do about it
There’s a very specific kind of panic that hits when your pipeline is empty—or worse, unpredictable.
You start questioning everything.
Are people just not buying right now? Is it my messaging? My pricing? Do I need to start posting 14 times a day on LinkedIn? Was it a mistake to turn down that one weird lead two months ago?
This is the emotional reality for many business owners and founders—especially those without a dedicated marketing or sales team. And even for someone like me (a marketing strategist who should know better), it still hits hard.
The Emotional Cost of an Empty Pipeline
When I get scared, I get paralyzed.
My mind races with a million thoughts, but my body can’t move. I sit staring at the screen, overwhelmed by competing ideas, urgent tasks, and a sense of helplessness that makes everything feel urgent… and impossible.
I start doubting myself.
Tapping my foot under the desk like it could somehow shake loose a great idea.
It’s a dark place. And it’s more common than most of us admit.
If you’ve ever felt this, you’re not alone—and you’re not broken. But you are likely operating without a reliable plan.
The Practical Toll of No Plan
Without a plan to fill your pipeline, you’re forced to rely on short bursts of energy whenever things get quiet. And that’s a recipe for burnout.
It’s reactive. Unpredictable. Exhausting.
You can’t make smart decisions in feast-or-famine mode. You undercharge. You take on poor-fit clients. You spread yourself thin trying to “be everywhere.” Worst of all, you start to resent the business you built.
A healthy pipeline isn’t just about sales. It’s about sanity.
And that’s why I always come back to one thing when I’m feeling stuck:
🧭 A plan.
My 90-Day Plan to Calm the Chaos (and Fill the Pipeline)
Here’s the framework I use to get out of panic mode and into progress:
🧩 1. What’s the big-picture objective?
What’s the overall objective? Maybe it’s launching a new offer, landing three new clients, or building authority in a new niche. This should connect to your bigger business goals—not just short-term revenue.
📊 2. What KPIs tell me I’m on track?
What will tell you if things are working (or not)? This could be email list growth, qualified calls booked, demo requests, engagement on key posts, etc. Choose a few signals to track.
🎯 3. What are the specific, measurable goals for the next 90 days?
Now get specific. What exactly do you want to achieve in the next 90 days? (e.g., grow email list by 20%, book 10 sales calls, close 3 new retainers.)
💥 4. What’s the ONE offer I’m focusing on?
This is key. When everything feels urgent, simplify. Pick one offer to build your marketing around for the next 90 days.
📣 5. What are the 3 core tactics?
I pick one in each category:
- Owned: newsletter, blog, website updates
- Earned: referrals, partnerships, press
- Social: LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.
Less is more. Especially when you’re low on bandwidth.
✍️ 6. What content will I create to support this?
What assets can you create to support your plan? This could be a video series, lead magnet, blog posts, case studies, or even a great FAQ page. Think reusable content that fuels multiple channels.
- Blog post series
- Video clips
- A lead magnet or downloadable tool
- Case study
- FAQ post
🔁 7. What’s the flow from prospect to customer?
What’s the motion from awareness to interest to action? What content or CTA guides people from one stage to the next? This helps you organize your content and your calls to action. Map it out.
✅ The Checklist That Calms My Nervous System
Once I’ve mapped all of the above, I turn it into an action plan. A step-by-step checklist that breaks things down into bite-sized moves.
Step-by-step. Realistic. Prioritized.
No more guessing. Just executing.
And yes—some days I still have to mute half of LinkedIn to stop comparing myself to people who seem like they have it all figured out (they probably don’t).
But I keep coming back to the plan.
Because consistency is what makes the magic happen.
TL;DR: The Pipeline Plan Is the Panic Cure
If you’re feeling the panic creep in, take a breath—and make a plan.
You don’t need to overhaul your brand or invent a new funnel.
You just need to decide what matters most and build around it.
